Martial Artists Bring Home The Bling

The WKC World Karate & Kickboxing Championships recently took place in Orlando, Florida and four martial artists from RMA Karate Centres took part in the event as part of the Canadian national karate team.

Second degree black belt Tara Krale, an instructor at the Barrie karate club came home with four gold medals after competing in seven events.

Brown belt Shamus Berube competed in three events and for the first time in the traditional weapons division where he won a bronze medal.

Eden McGuire competed for the first time as part of the national team and was beaming with joy after demonstrating her Chinese Wushu forms where she won one gold and one bronze medal.

Third degree black belt Tressa Young, who was at the event as an official, was asked to be part of Canada’s women’s fighting team.   An unexpected call to be part of the 5 woman team but the RMA school owner was pleased to take part and came away winning bronze.

Junior black belt Sale Berube gave a strong performance as part of the national team among a large group of young martial artists.  Despite representing our country well, she just fell short of medaling.

In total the RMA martial artists came home with 4 gold and 3 bronze medals and are ready to prepare for next year’s team trials.

Young Karate School Owner Guides Parents to Choosing a Dojo

Entrepreneur twenty-year-old Tressa Young owns two karate schools in the city of Barrie, Ontario.  Unlike most her age who went off to college, she owns and runs two martial arts schools with great success.  Her young age is not a deterrent for potential students, in fact her extensive resume of world medals and stunt work at her young age is what attracts parents who enrol their children in her school’s programs.

The third-degree black belt finds many parents who inquire about enrolling their children want their kids to take karate but are unsure what to look for.  The 10 time Canadian national team member guides parents to help make an educated decision.

It’s interesting. The typical phone call I receive is from a parent who wants their child to take karate.  The first question they ask will be “How old can they start?” to the last question being “How often would he get his belt?”.  Between all the questions asked I am often told how their child wants to be a ninja or that their child needs to be more focused.

I’m honest when answering all of their questions simply to make sure our karate school is the right fit for what they are looking for.  If they want their child to receive their black belt as quickly as possible, I recommend another local school for them that gives belts based upon attendance.  A school where the almighty dollar takes precedence over the culture of karate which was taught by my instructor.

I explain to the parent that we do not give our belts away, that  progression is based upon the student’s knowledge of the required curriculum and for some even getting to yellow belt can take up to one year.  Yes I said one year.  Everyone learns at their own pace but they are always learning.

Every martial arts school is different with their own policies and with their own agenda.  Some schools, like ours, will take students as young as 3 years old where they take class in a Little Dragons or Little Ninjas program.  Of course we do not teach them the same as our older students and they do not have the same curriculum either.  But the benefits of starting this young is not lost on the parents who enrol them.

With all the questions and all the answers I give it gets down to finding the right fit for what the parent expects out of the program, the instructor and the school.   For some parents who call they have a clear definition of what they are looking for, whereas others have to be guided to figuring that out.  Sometimes it may be the style you are looking for but most times that is not what matters.

Here are the questions you may want to consider asking when thinking about enrolling your child in karate;

Can your child attend a free trial class?  Almost all karate schools provide a free trial class and this is a great way to see how a class is run, to meet the instructor and to ask any questions that might arise from watching the class.  Be sure to take a free trial class at a few karate schools so that you can make an informed decision.

What is the class size?  Honestly the class size will make a difference for your child

What is the student teacher ratio?  This is a very important question because if there are 30 kids in class with only one instructor and maybe 2 helpers who are kids themselves, is your child receiving the quality instruction you are paying for?  At our karate school the student teacher ratio is 6:1 for beginners. We are fortunate to have several adult black belt volunteers and higher belt students who assist in class.

How often can my child attend class?  While most children will attend class twice a week , if there is an option to attend unlimited classes, would you take advantage of this?

What does the membership include?  Does it include sparring or a fight night?  Are there other programs included in the membership, like extreme martial arts that your child is able to attend with the membership?

Does the membership include a free uniform?  Almost all new members at any karate school receives a free uniform as part of the membership.

Is self-defense taught regularly?  I cannot stress enough the importance of your child learning hands-on self-defense.  Quality instruction in self-defense will make the difference in your child’s safety and ability to protect themselves.  We are a light contact (medium contact for higher belts) school, meaning the self-defense we teach is practical, hands-on and gives the student the ability to see first-hand the results of using the technique taught.  We teach self-defense in every class and the students love learning how to break free from a hold or how to evade a punch.

No matter your choice of karate school, your hope is that your child’s self-esteem, confidence and focus will improve to the point it will  be extended into their everyday life.  So first take the time to visit each school during the class your child would take.  Doing this will let you see how a regular class is taught.  Then take the time to have your child take a free trial class.  Sometimes instructors will make a class “super fun” so that the potential student will have tons of fun and want to join but once joined will teach the class normally.  Let your child know that while you make the final decision, their input is important and listen to what your child thinks.

If you want recreation and fun for your child then make sure your enroll them in a school that meets your goal.  This type of karate school may use the “tip” method where they place tape on the belt to signify time spent in class.   Keep in mind not all schools use this method to keep track of attendance so make sure to ask.  If you want your child to learn in a more traditional setting then enrol your child in a school does not give belts away so easily but on needing to know the curriculum.  This type of school will most likely be without loud music  playing in class and where the instructor will inform you that everyone learns at their own pace with a traditional belt testing (grading) required by each student to progress to the next belt.

Every karate school is different based on style, belts, sparring, self-defense and tuition fees.  Remember you get what you paid for but make sure what you are paying for meets your expectations.

World Karate and Kickboxing Champion Tressa Young will be offering a free kids kickboxing class on Tuesday September 15th. The class runs for 40 minutes (6:15pm to 6:55pm) and is for ages 7 to 12 years old.     Unlike a cardio kickboxing class kids will be kicking & punching bags and working with partners all the while having fun while getting fit.  No experience is needed and  anyone interested in continuing after the first free class can sign-up that night for a full month of lessons at only $15 pay-as-you-go.

Yoga Instructor Jessica Harvey will be instructing a girls only Yoga program for ages 8 to 17 with classes running every Tuesday 5:45pm to 6:15pm.  The girls only yoga program is open to all levels and all body types with absolutely no experience needed.  Classes start Tuesday September 15th with registration required and fee of only $15 for a full month of lessons.

“There is a need for both of these programs and a need for these programs to be assessable to everyone at an affordable price.  The girls only Yoga makes sense and Jessica is a great role model and instructor for the girls.  She held a free trial class recently and the group of girls who took part in the yoga class just loved it.  My kids kickboxing class is an extension of my adult kickboxing class and just made sense.  We use bags, mitts, gloves and everyone loves it.  I’ve already started taking several registrations for the free class and I’m excited to teach it.  We have a good mix of both boys and girls for the kids kickboxing and I can’t wait for September 15th “, RMA owner and instructor Tressa Young.

Young’s resume in the martial arts is extensive including winning 64 world medals (37 of which are gold) at the World Karate & Kickboxing Commission’s world championships that have been held in Europe and North America.  Young has been on the national team 10 times and continues to grow her resume that includes stunt performing and acting.

Why Kids Who Do Karate Get BETTER GRADES

RMA is unique with low student teacher ratio. Come in for your FREE trial class! Back to School Special ends soon!

Rigorous academics require discipline: A good student is one who understands that life is not a free-for-all, where they can just do what they want when they want. Good students do their homework even when their favourite show is on TV. In order to get good grades, they must complete their homework, turn it in on time, and study and prepare for tests. The trait necessary for achieving all these is discipline. Karate helps to develop this discipline because it helps students learn structure, order and most importantly, how to have self-control.

Being prepared leads to success: Much of academic success hinges on being prepared and organized. Think about it, what good is it to write the greatest essay since Charles Dickens if you leave it at home and so can’t turn it in on time? Karate teaches kids that they always need to be prepared. For example, when they’re sparring, they know they need to stay in fighting stance and stay on their bounce so they can explode into action when they need to. Kids who train in
karate carry this trait over to their school work.

Good students have to be able to focus : With all the opportunities and channels of Entertainment available to today’s kids it can get difficult to focus. But in order to cope with rigorous schoolwork, students must learn how to listen to the teachers and not get distracted by their surroundings. Karate can help your child to develop this very important character trait; focus and concentration. When in karate class, they learn to shut out distractions, whether they’re external (classmates playing around) or internal (negative thoughts and doubts).

Setting and achieving goals is critical to success: Success comes from achieving a series of smaller goals which ultimately culminates in the accomplishment of larger goals. In school, this could mean finishing an essay on time or reading a few chapters ahead of the class. In karate, it means passing a grading and earning a new belt. As a karate student, your child learns to enjoy the satisfaction of accomplishing goals and this will spur them to seek out opportunities to replicate in school and at home.

Physical activity builds cognitive functions : Researchers have discovered that physical activity levels have been positively linked to cognitive function during development in school-aged children. Besides the neurological connotations, giving kids an outlet to move their bodies can actually help them academically by improving their memory and increasing their attention span. Karate is a very physical activity so can help build cognitive functions as well as serve as an outlet to help improve memory.

Karate can be extremely useful for your children to boost their school grades if they are already “A” students. If they are having problems with school work, it can also help them by helping to develop necessary skills to become a very good student.

Cheers to Encouragement

We've started our summer camps this week and while most of the kids are students of RMA there are a few who are in our dojo for the first time and doing anything physical including karate for the very first time ever.

During camp we work on basics and kata while also having many fun games between all the work. Sometimes a child, especially someone new to the dojo, will be nervous even reluctant to try something new in a group.

Free time is when the kids can bond freely, have fun playing while meeting the other campers and build up their confidence.

Watching our students in camp has made me a very proud Sensei. The RMA students cheered on and shouted words of encouragement to the new campers who, for some of them, were having some difficulty playing our jumping game. Our RMA students cheered loudly and clapped excitedly for the new kids who gave their best.

The RMA kids looked beyond the disability of one student, the shyness of the others and were so welcoming and encouraging. I have no doubt our RMA students will be fine young adults one day!

Thank you to our students for being so awesome!

MARTIAL ARTS MOTIVATION

Tressa Young is not your typical 20 something in university, working, traveling or partying.  Instead, she owns two successful karate schools in the city of Barrie with locations in both the north and south ends of the city.

A martial arts instructor since 2005, the third degree black belt operates Tenshi’s RMA Karate Centres sometimes working 12 hour days seven days a week.   This is also done while managing to be a stunt performer for film/TV and attend tournaments across the globe.  Ask her and she would tell you she would not trade it in for anything.

Tenshi, a Japanese word, meaning angel was a nickname Young’s mom gave her and the name stuck.  So much that she decided to make it part of her business name.

Part of her motivation for operating her own karate schools, was to teach the martial arts to kids and to share her expertise with all who are willing to learn.  Young is a 10 time Canadian national karate team member and has earned multiple world titles. The fit blonde has also trained national and world champions helping many of her students make the national team every year since 2009 including 4 this year.

Easing the workload at both locations are her 14 volunteer instructors and assistants who dedicate their time helping in class, all of them wanting to give back to the students.

Young’s bubbly personality along with her two pets are always there to welcome everyone as they come into the dojo.  “The younger students especially love petting the dogs before they start their class.  It’s become a ritual for many of the students to say hello to the dogs while chatting with me before class begins.  The dogs have become the RMA mascots”, Young stated.

Today, Tenshi’s RMA Karate Centres has more than 150 students ranging from three to over 50 years old. The students have the benefit of training in karate at both locations covered under the same price.  The Barrie locations also offer a range of programs including kickboxing, Chinese Wushu, fitness, weaponry and self-defense.

Young has worked hard to build the image of the business outside the club including supporting the Women & Children’s Shelter of Barrie and hosting free self-defense classes.

The RMA north Barrie location will be hosting free self-defense training for ages 13 years and older on Thursday June 25th at 7pm.  For more information about the self-defense class or other programs call Tressa Young at 705-796-1994 or visit www.rmakarate.com .

RMA Martial Artists Score Medal Haul at Ontario Qualifiers

Nine martial artists from RMA Karate Centres in Barrie were in London taking part in the World Karate & Kickboxing Commission’s Ontario qualifiers.  Held at the London convention centre the RMA students competed in several individual events for the chance to advance to the national team qualifiers next month in Ottawa.

The Ontario qualifiers were tough with some divisions having as many as 40 competitors vying for top spot and wanting to come home with some hardware.  Only the top eight of each division advance to the national team trials and every martial artist there traveled to London in hopes of being one step closer to being on Canada’s team.

Second degree black belt Tara Krale gave her best performance to date in the women’s 35 years and over divisions winning gold in Chinese forms, gold in Korean forms,  gold in freestyle forms, gold in creative weapons, gold in point sparring, silver in musical weapons, silver in continuous sparring, and fourth place in both the traditional weapons and traditional forms divisions.

First degree black belt Tara Graham gave a strong demonstration of skill in the women’s 35 years and over divisions winning silver in Chinese forms, silver in Korean forms, bronze in Traditional weapons and placed fifth in traditional forms.

Eleven-year-old junior black belt Sale Berube won gold in Korean forms, silver in Chinese forms, silver in creative weapons, placed fourth in the traditional weapons, fifth in traditional forms and sixth place in musical weapons.

Purple belt Shamus Berube continues to fine tune demonstrating his skill in the men’s 35 years and over divisions winning gold in traditional weapons, gold in traditional forms and silver in the point sparring division.

Wushu student Eden McGuire gave proof her flair for the Chinese martial art (Wushu) was difficult to challenge in the girls’ 16/17 age group winning gold in the Chinese forms and silver in the traditional weapons.

Purple belt Ella Zenon was all smiles after competing in the girls 11/12 age group winning gold in the Korean forms and placing fourth in the Chinese forms division.

Purple belt Jacob Allen thought he would give the Ontario qualifiers a shot and his effort gave positive results in the boys 13 to 15 age group placing fifth in the traditional weapons division.

In the 10 and under girls traditional weapons, blue belt Alyson Caron demonstrated determination placing eighth in the division.

His first competition of the year blue belt Wesley Wu gave his personal best in the largest divisions of the event.  Wu was a finalist in both the traditional forms and creative weapons divisions.

The eight who will be traveling to Ottawa next month have no time to rest on their medal haul as they continue to train even harder for the national team trials.  They are already back in the karate school training in preparation for next month’s event.
