READY TO TAKE ON THE WORLD

Five Barrie martial artists ranging in age from 9 to 50 years old are Ireland bound this fall as part of the Canadian national karate team.  The five train out of RMA Karate Centres and after securing their spot on the 250 member Canadian team, are ready to take on martial artists from 19 other countries.   

Third degree black belt Tressa Young is a seasoned national team member making the team for the ninth time.  With 56 world medals under her belt including multiple world champion titles since first making the team in 2003, the head instructor of the south Barrie karate school has the experience and skill to bring home gold once again.  Last year at the world championships in Italy, Young won 7 gold and 2 silver medals for Canada.  The nineteen-year-old black belt started training in karate at age four accomplishing more than most at such a young age.  Coined as “Canada’s Sweetheart” by World Karate & Kickboxing Commission’s director John Douvris, Tressa Young continues teaching national and international champions while also dabbling in film stunt work on the side.

Also making the national team and heading to Ireland is RMA black belt instructor Linda Young along with students Liam North, Sale Berube and Shamus Berube.   Under the instruction of fourth degree black belt Craig Ridout and third degree black belt Tressa Young, all five continue with their dedicated training with their goal of bringing home gold.

Barrie Bushido Open Martial Arts Event!

Promoters Tressa Young and Craig Ridout are hosting the 4^th annual Barrie Bushido Open martial arts tournament this Saturday May 10^th at Bear Creek Secondary School in Barrie. 

The event in its fourth year brings together martial artists from across Ontario and New York ready to give their best and hopefully return home with some hardware.  Competitors as young as 4 years old to adult and from beginner to black belt take part in this local event.

“Being a competitor myself and taking part in tournaments across North America and Europe, I know the benefits of competing.  You gain self-confidence, your skill improves, you meet so many amazing people and there is a sense of pride having accomplished entering the ring and giving your best”, Young stated.

The competition is open to all martial arts styles interested in competing and to spectators interested in watching.   In partnership with the event there will also be several vendors on hand helping raise funds for the Women & Children’s Shelter of Barrie.

RMA 7 ADVANCE TO NATIONAL TEAM TRIALS

Seven martial artists from RMA Karate Centres took part in the World Karate & Kickboxing Commission (WKC) Ontario provincial trials on April 5^th in London, Ontario.  The WKC provincial trials is a black belt competition but is open to martial artists of any belt level who wish try to secure their spot at the national team trials.  Each martial artist must make top 8 in their respective divisions in order to advance to the Canadian national team trials next month in Ottawa. 

Third degree black belt Linda Young did extremely well for her second year at the provincial trials.  The RMA instructor won gold in the 42 years & over Women’s Creative Weapons division, gold in the 42 years & over Women’s hard style forms division and silver in the 18 years & over Women’s Chinese forms division.

Second degree black belt Tressa Young is no stranger to the provincial trial process and competed in 9 divisions this year.  The RMA head instructor competed in the 18 years & over Women’s divisions winning gold in musical weapons, extreme forms, creative weapons, freestyle forms, Chinese forms, Korean forms, traditional weapons and minus 55kg point fighting.  She also went on to win silver in the traditional forms division.

Brown belt Liam North continues to improve with this being his third year in attendance at the event.  In the Boy’s 10 years & under North won gold in traditional weapons and bronze in traditional forms.  He also went on to compete in the Boy’s 12 years & under divisions winning gold in extreme forms, Chinese forms and Korean forms while also winning silver in musical weapons, silver in point fighting, bronze in continuous fighting, bronze in traditional weapons and 6^th place in traditional forms.

Second time at the trials brown belt Sale Berube gave a strong performance competing in both the Girl’s 10 years & under divisions as well as the Girl’s 12 years & under divisions. In the 10 years & under division Berube won  6^thplace in the traditional forms division and gold in the traditional weapons division.   In the 12 years & under divisions Berube won gold in Korean forms, 5^th place in musical weapons, 6^th place in traditional forms and 6^th place in creative weapons.

Green belt Shamus Berube did well for his first provincial trials winning silver in the men’s 35 years & over plus 85kg point fighting.

Wushu students Eden McGuire and Arianna Nicholson competed for the very first time at the provincial trials and impressed the judges with their skill.  McGuire won gold in the 13 to 15 girl’s Chinese forms and Nicholson won silver in the 12 years & under girls Chinese forms. 

All seven are headed to Ottawa in May for the WKC Canadian National team trials where they will  hope to secure top four placement in their divisions to make the national team.  Only those who make top four in their divisions will be part of the national karate team and travel to Dublin, Ireland for the WKC World Karate Championships this October.

Always striving to improve services to their students and parents RMA Karate Centres continue to review current programs and schedules for ease of their members busy lifestyle and more enjoyment for students in class.  

The south Barrie location of RMA Karate Centres on Bryne Drive has reviewed their current programs and after many requests from current and prospective students has improved the scheduling to allow siblings to train together and for parents and children to train together .  This not only makes it easier for a busy family but also gives the opportunity for families to learn and have fun in the martial arts.  Head instructor and second degree black belt Tressa Young can attest to this theory having trained for the past 15 years alongside her mother and father.

NEW - All ages Kickboxing on Thursday nights This is perfect for the family who want to get fit together while having tons of fun. Class time is every Thursday 6:45pm to 7:30pm.

NEW -  Little Dragons (3 to 5yrs) & Junior (6 to 12yrs) class times run at the same time on Tuesday & Thursdays. ALL students bow in and warm up together then split to take their separate classes taught by 2 different instructors.

NEW – Junior (6 to 12yrs) & Youth/Adult (13yrs & over) class times run at the same time on Tuesday & Thursday nights. ALL students bow in and warm up together then half way separate to be instructed by 2 different instructors.

WORLD MEDALISTS RETURN TO BARRIE

Martial artists from Barrie attended the 2013 World Karate & Kickboxing Championships in Italy last week as part of the Canadian national karate team.  The handful of martial artists who train at RMA Karate Centres in Barrie qualified for the national team in May and as part of the team represented Canada at the international event.

Second degree black belt and RMA school owner Tressa Young transitioned well into the adult divisions continuing to prove she is at the top of her sport.  Competing in nine separate divisions from traditional Japanese hard style to fighting, the eighteen year old won 7 gold and 2 silver medals.  The eighteen year old continues to impress the officials every year at the annual event not only with her skill but also with the level of class and sportsmanship she displays in the ring. 

Third degree black belt and RMA instructor Linda Young, a first time national team member and international competitor did extremely well competing in the women’s veterans Japanese hard style and Chinese forms coming home with 2 silver medals.  The forty-nine year old gave herself a challenge and succeeded from national team trials to the international event in Italy.  “Tressa and several of our students are extremely successful at this high level of competition and I felt it was time to test the waters to see what I could do.  It was an amazing experience with excellent competition in my age group.   I am happy with my results but I am going to give it a try again next year with my goal being gold for Canada”, Young stated.

Second degree black belt and RMA instructor Tara Krale gave a strong performance in the women’s 35 years plus divisions.  The first time Canadian team member and international competitor found herself on the medal podium three times at the world championships.  She won 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal.  Krale was all smiles with her accomplishments and proudly wore her medals home.

Purple belt Liam North proved that hard work and determination pays off.  At the age of eight years old this two-time national team member gave everything he had in the ring impressing the judges who made a point of stating he had a ton of heart.  North’s presentation of his forms were top notch including the boy’s Chinese forms division where he won a silver medal.

Between the four from RMA Karate Centres they collectively came home with 15 medals for Canada. 

46 Students Earn New Rank

RMA Karate Centres of Barrie had a busy month in June.  Not only did they open a second location in the city of Barrie but they also promoted 46 students to their new belt rank. The 46 students underwent a traditional belt grading testing their knowledge of curriculum, history and self-defense.
